What Is Solar Home Energy Leasing?

Have you heard about solar home energy leasing programs that aim to make solar power more affordable for the average homeowner? The initiative has been embraced by installers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Pennsylvania so far, but more states are joining all the time.

Who Offers Solar Home Energy Leasing?

SunRun, SunPower, and SolarCity are the top three solar home energy leasing companies.

What Are The Pros of Solar Home Energy Leasing?

  • You can get a solar panel installation on your roof with little to no money down.

  • The cost of your electricity bill will be significantly lower.

  • You can opt to buy the remainder of the lease from the installer at any time.

What Are The Cons of Solar Home Energy Leasing?

  • You still have a fixed monthly payment to the company to cover the cost of the lease and your home’s reduced-rate electricity.

  • You do not receive tax credits or cash rebates for your installation (the companies do).

The bottom line: It’s a good idea to get into the solar home energy leasing program if clean energy is a top priority for you, but you don’t have the money to invest yourself. It’s also a good idea if you want cheaper electric prices right now and want to lock in that same price for the future before any increases occur. On the other hand, if you can put a little bit of cash up-front, it’s a better deal to buy the system yourself and receive all the cash rebates and tax subsidies. It may take five to eight years to pay for itself, but at least you are beholden to no one.
